Compound Words

A combination of two or more words with a meaning is called compound words.

Eg: Sun + light= sunlight

The combination may be Noun + Noun, Noun + verb, Noun + gerund, Verb + Noun, etc..

Noun + Noun

  • hand + bag =Handbag
  • sun + light = Sunlight
  • post + card = Postcard
  • foot + hills = Foothills
  • school + girl = Schoolgirl

 

Noun + Verb

  • book + mark = bookmark
  • bus + stop =bus stop
  • sun + set =sunset
  • type + write = typewrite
  • snow + drop = snowdrop

 

Noun + Gerund

  • mind + reading =mind-reading
  • cat + walking = cat-walking
  • test + driving = test-driving
  • day + dreaming =daydreaming
  • book + binding = bookbinding
Noun + Adjective

  • force + full = forcefull
  • snow + white = snow white
